At 1244, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a tractor trailer on fire at the Truck Rest Area between Exits 13 and 14 on Interstate 81. Engine 204 and Tanker 207 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Virginia State Police. Per the driver, she was northbound on I-81 when she noticed smoke coming from the right side of the engine compartment. When she pulled into the Rest Area, she did notice flames on that side of the truck. She was able to release the trailer from the tractor and pull the tractor away. Portable fire extinguishers were used to knock down the fire and personnel on Engine 204 cooled off the hood and engine area. The cause was most likely electrical in the area of the passenger side headlight with the greatest area of burn observed by those on scene.
