Vehicle Fire and Vehicle Accidents – September 24, 2010

At 15:44, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a car fire at the end of the south bound on ramp at Exit 17 of Interstate 81. Vehicle was fully engulfed upon arrival. Engine 204 and Tanker 202 responded to this fire, along with the Washington County Sheriffs’ Department and the Washington County Life Saving Crew. While completing the extinguishing of this fire, we were alerted at 16:32 of two accidents with injuries in the same lane of the Interstate, but in the Exit 19 area. Engine 204 and Tanker 202 responded to one accident while Engine 201 and Utility 207 responded to the other. The northern-most accident was the most serious, involving three vehicles and requiring one victim to be taken by MedFlight to Bristol Regional Medical Center. Slow traffic that was backing up from the vehicle fire could have been a factor in these two accidents.
