Vehicle Accident on Watauga Road – June 1, 2017

At 08:11, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a single vehicle accident with possible entrapment in the 23000 block of Watauga Road. Upon arrival, it was determined a tandem dump truck hauling gravel, traveling westbound, had flipped and ended up on its side, with the gravel in the roadway. The driver was out of the truck upon our arrival and was transported by a Damascus Rescue Squad unit. Rescue Engine 205, Utility 210, and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Damascus Rescue Squad, VA State Police and VA Department of Transportation. The roadway was blocked for over 2 hours for cleanup operations. The truck leaked antifreeze and hydraulic fluid on the roadway, which Abingdon Fire was able to control. A small track loader was brought in to remove the gravel from the roadway. VDOT was notified to make repairs to the roadway shoulder that was damaged by the truck when it overturned.
