At 16:34, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a single vehicle accident with the possibility of the vehicle in the pond on Spring Lake Road. Upon arrival, the vehicle was on its top with a single occupant inside. The vehicle was traveling South on Porterfield Highway and upon leaving Porterfield Highway the vehicle became airborne clearing a fence and landing in an adjacent field, away from the pond. The occupant was transported by Washington County Life Saving Crew to Johnston Memorial Hospital. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205, and Utility 210 responded, along with units from Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police and Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the muddy conditions in the field, the rollback wrecker hauling the wrecked vehicle had to be pulled out by a farm tractor.
