At 1422, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a vehicle accident on Interstate 81 at the 21.1 mile marker in the median. The van left the northbound lane and rolled over in the median. There were three occupants in the vehicle and extrication was done on both sides of the vehicle. All three occupants were transported to local hospitals; two by ambulances; but the most seriously injured person was airlifted by MedFlight. Cleanup of the contents of the van was extensive, as a lot of the items were thrown out of the vehicle. Rescue Engine 205, Rescue Engine 206, and Battalion 209 responded. Also on scene were units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police, Abingdon Ambulance Service, Richard Ambulance Service and MedFlight.
