At 12:09, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at Exit 19 of Interstate 81. The vehicle was traveling southbound and was exiting the Interstate. The driver failed to make the right turn at the top of the ramp and drove into a ravine, hitting a tree. Driver had to be extricated from the vehicle, a task that took nearly 2 hours. After driver was removed from the vehicle, he was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center by VA State Police MedFlight. Engine 201, Brush 208, Utility 207, and Command 209 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and VA State Police.
