Vehicle Accident at Main Street and Cummings Street – June 19, 2012

At 12:34, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an accident at Main St and Cummings Street. The driver of a vehicle traveling northbound on Cummings had a medical issue and veered off the roadway, hitting a utility pole. There was a ground wire on the vehicle with the driver still inside. We told the driver to remain inside the vehicle until Appalachian Power personnel arrived and could determine if the line was energized. It was determined that it was not, so EMS personnel were able to remove the driver and transport to Johnston Memorial Hospital. This interrupted power and other utilities most of the remainder of Monday into the evening. Engine 201, Utility 207, and Command 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Abingdon Police, and Abingdon Public Works.
