Two Vehicle Accidents – January 25, 2018

Abingdon Fire responded to two separate vehicle accidents that both could have had devastating results. The first accident occurred at the intersection of Jeb Stuart Highway and Beech Circle. At 11:15, a vehicle t-boned another in the intersection sending two occupants to Johnston Memorial Hospital. The vehicle that was t-boned in the driver side resulted in the passenger being transported and the driver of the second vehicle was also transported. Chief 201 and Rescue Engine 206 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Damascus Rescue, Virginia Department of Transportation, and Virginia State Police.

A little over an hour later at 12:33, a second accident occurred at the intersection of West Valley Street and Cummings Street. This resulted in a single vehicle veering off Valley Street and hitting a utility pole. The female driver was believed to have had a medical issue that caused the accident. The pole was broken along with a town street directional sign. It also caused several utility lines to be lower above the street. The repair was extensive, involving several utility companies. Repairs went into the night, causing major traffic issues due to the intersection and adjacent streets being closed. After the pole was replaced and all utilities restored, the intersection was reopened. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 206 and Utility 210 responded, along with Abingdon Police, Abingdon Public Works, Appalachian Power Company, Comcast, and several other utility companies.
