At 07:35, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a 2-vehicle accident in the southbound lane of Interstate 81 south of Exit 22. A vehicle traveling northbound crossed the median and struck a vehicle in the southbound lane. The sole occupant in the vehicle that crossed the median was dead on the scene. The driver of the vehicle in the southbound lane, also a single occupant vehicle, was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center by MedFlight. Several units of the VA State Police investigated the accident. Engine 201, Brush 208, Utility 207, and Command 210 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Abingdon Ambulance Service, and a unit from Bristol Life Saving Crew; who was in the Abingdon area.
