Tree Fell on Vehicle on Elementary Drive – June 13, 2019

At 06:31, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an accident on Elementary Drive. A pickup truck was traveling on Elementary Drive toward Porterfield Highway when a huge tree fell into the roadway and onto the pickup truck. Fire units were on Interstate 81 when the call came in working a fatal vehicle accident. Upon arrival, the single occupant was trapped inside with the tree still on the truck. Attempts to use winch on the Rescue Engine to pull the tree off the truck were unsuccessful due to pressure on the entrapped patient. The patient was extricated by fire personnel removing a portion of the roof using the rescue tools. He was conscious, but seriously injured. He was transported by Washington County Life Saving Crew to Bristol Regional Medical Center. A crane was requested from Appalachian Power to lift the tree off the truck. As the tree was lifted, a rollback wrecker was able to pull the truck out from under the tree. Chief 201, Engine 204, Rescue Engine 205, Brush 208 and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Washington County Fire Rescue, Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation.
