At 17:48, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a tractor-trailer with its brakes on fire in the Northbound lane of Interstate 81, South of Exit 17. Upon arrival, the brake fire had spread to the trailer and its contents. The trailer was loaded with tomatoes. Engine 204, Rescue Engine 206, Tanker 207 and Utility 210 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Department of Transportation.
