At 12:50, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a tractor-trailer on fire at the Truck Rest Area on Interstate 81 between Exit 13 and 14. Upon arrival, the fire has completely engulfed the tractor portion of the truck. The box trailer was loaded with rolls of paper and the load was not affected by the fire. The tractor was a total loss. Abingdon Fire personnel in addition to extinguishing the fire were also involved in mitigating the hazardous materials flow of engine fuel and oil before it got to a drain. Engine 204, Engine 201, Tanker 202, Utility 207, Command 210, and Command 209 responded and were assisted by VA State Police, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and the VA Department of Transportation.
