Tractor Trailer and Car Accident on the Intersection of Porterfield Highway and Black Hollow Road – January 29, 2016

At 16:45; Abingdon Fire was dispatched to an accident involving a tractor trailer and a passenger car at the intersection of Porterfield Highway and Black Hollow Road, north of Abingdon. It was reported in the initial page that the truck was on fire. Engine 204, Tanker 202, Brush 208, Utility 207, Rehab Trailer 1, Command 209, and Command 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Department of Transportation. Upon arrival, heavy fire was observed by the first units arriving on the scene. State Police reported that a passenger vehicle pulled onto Porterfield Highway from Black Hollow Road into the front of a tractor trailer hauling coal. The truck swerved to miss the passenger car, but still hit it. The car ran off the roadway and down the embankment on the right side of the road. The truck overturned and dumped the entire load of coal. Diesel was spilled on the roadway and caught on fire. The driver of the truck was ejected and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center by MedFlight. The operator of the passenger car was also transported by ambulance to BRMC with serious injuries. Fire units finally cleared the scene and got all equipment cleaned and back in service about midnight.
