Tractor Trailer Acident on Interstate 81 – May 11, 2011

At 16:45, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an accident and fire on Interstate 81 near the 19 mile marker. The accident was the result of one tractor trailer getting on the Interstate at the Exit 19 north bound on ramp when it was hit from behind by a second tractor trailer. The second truck burst into flames. The truck hauled mail for the Postal Service and was empty at the time of the accident. This accident resulted in both north bound lanes being closed down for several hours with all traffic being rerouted thru the Town of Abingdon. As one can image, this increased traffic caused much congestion on Main Street until the Interstate was reopened.
