At 05:12, Abingdon Fire received a call of an accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81 at the 21.3 mile marker. The truck was headed Southbound, veered off the roadway into the median, and overturned on its side. Fortunately, the cargo was rolls of paper that only filled the front quarter of the trailer. The driver was not injured. Chief 201, Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205, Rescue Engine 206 and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police. The Southbound passing lane of the Interstate was closed until the tractor-trailer could be removed.
