At 05:03, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 81 at Mile Marker 16 near the Stone Mill Road Overpass. A passenger car had spun on the wet roadway and a tractor-trailer swerved to miss the car and overturned in the medium. The tractor-trailer was hauling cola products in bottles. The cargo had to be off-loaded prior to removing the truck. The driver of the car was injured and transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital by Emergency Medical Services personnel. The truck driver was evaluated on the scene. Rescue Engine 205, Battalion 209 and Utility 210 responded along with units from Washington County Fire Rescue, Richardson Ambulance Service, Virginia State Police, Abingdon Police, and Virginia Department of Transportation. Hilts Wrecker Service responded with equipment to remove the cargo and upright the truck.
