Tractor-Trailer Accident on Interstate 81 – December 3, 2012

At 02:22, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to an accident involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81. The accident occurred at the 16.2 mile marker in the southbound lane. The truck was hauling sand and the trailer ended up in the median and the road tractor came to rest against the passing lane guard rail. This lane was blocked for several hours. All the contents of the trailer spilled into the median and a crane was brought in to remove the trailer. Diesel fuel was leaking at a steady pace from the road tractor and fire crews were able to stop the flow and confine any leaks to the roadway. There was a massive amount of debris in the roadway that included gravel and sand that was removed by fire personnel using backpack blowers. The driver of the truck was not injured. Engine 204, Utility 207, Brush 208, and Command 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and VA State Police.
