Tanker Truck Fire on Interstate 81 – May 22, 2016

At 13:38, Abingdon Fire responded to an accident on Interstate 81 at Exit 14. Members on the scene prior to fire apparatus arrival advised the accident involved a tractor-trailer tanker with the cab on fire. It was determined to be an empty milk tanker. The truck hit the bridge over Jonesboro Road while traveling southbound. The truck ended up in the grass area between the Interstate and the southbound on ramp. The driver was able to safely exit the cab prior to it being engulfed by fire. Abingdon Engine 204, Tanker 207, Utility 210, Rhead Trailer 213, Brush 208, and Assistant Chief 202 responded along with Washington County Life Saving Crew Unit 54, Abingdon Police, VA State Police, Washington County Fire Rescue Engine 101, Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Washington County Department of Emergency Services Unit 911. All fire units cleared the scene and were back at Station 200 at 16:35.
