Single Vehicle Accident on Interstate 81 – January 31, 2022

At 17:04, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a single vehicle accident on Interstate 81 at the 15.7mile marker. The vehicle had veered off the roadway and hit a rock outcropping in the median. Vehicle was reported to be on fire at the time of dispatch, but no fire was observed upon our arrival. Motorists that had seen the accident were able to extinguish any fire in the vehicle. Driver was the only occupant in the vehicle. Lengthy extrication was needed and performed by both Fire and EMS crews. Patient was transported by MedFlight to Bristol Regional Medical Center. Chief 201, Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205, Tanker 207 and Utility 210 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, Abingdon Police, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and Virginia Department of Transportation. MedFlight landed on the Interstate, thus causing traffic to be diverted off the Interstate at Exit 17 and onto Route 11. Fire Units cleared at 19:41.
