At 22:11, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a single vehicle accident on the Northbound lane of Interstate 81 at the Virginia Creeper Trail overpass. There were no injuries, although the vehicle was on its side. The passing lane was blocked due to the accident. Chief 201, Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205, Rescue Engine 206 and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia Department of Transportation and Virginia State Police.
