At 18:39, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the corner of Wall Street and Remsburg Drive. A vehicle driving South on Wall Street left the roadway and hit the pedestrian bridge that goes over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, doing heavy damage to the stairs leading up to the bridge. The driver was evaluated by Washington County Life Saving Crew personnel. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205 and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Abingdon Police Department. The bridge is maintained by the Town of Abingdon Public Works Department. Public Works personnel responded and blocked off pedestrian access to the bridge. The bridge is an important part of Abingdon’s history, allowing pedestrians access across the heavily traveled railroad tracks.
