Railroad Grain Car Fire – November 1, 2010

At 13:21., Abingdon Fire was alerted to a Railroad Grain Car on fire at Lights Milling at the intersection of Green Springs Road and A Street. We believe that the contents of this car had been smoldering for several days prior to the fire. The product in the car was identified as corn gluten. We had received several calls from the area in the days prior to the fire of a gas odor that we were unable to pinpoint the source. The car is divided into 4 sections and one of the sections was on fire. A 3″ hose line was laid out from the hydrant at the above intersection to supply water to Tower 203, which was utilized to direct water into the top of the rail car. Engine 204, Tanker 202, Tower 203 and Command 209 responded to the call.
