Plane Crash at VA Highlands Airport – April 17, 2012

At 11:56, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to a plane crash on the VA Highlands Airport property. Engine 204, Tanker 202, and Utility 207 responded to the crash. Upon arrival, a small 4 seat plane has veered off the runway upon takeoff. It was reported that the cause of the crash was due to a mechanical issue with the plane’s rudder. The two occupants on the plane suffered minor injuries and were helped out of the plane by State Police Personnel that were at the VA State Police MedFlight Hanger. Other units that responded included the Washington County Life Saving Crew, VA State Police, and Washington County Sheriffs’ Department. There was no fire or fuel leakage as result of the crash.
