Penske Box Truck Accident on Interstate 81 – June 25, 2018

Abingdon Fire was alerted at 06:58 to a single vehicle accident at the Exit 13 northbound off ramp. Upon arrival, a 28′ rental truck was on its top. It had been pulling a car on a trailer and that became detached. A large volume of fluids had leaked from the overturned vehicle, but luckily was contained to the concrete drain along the side of the ramp. Hazardous materials booms and absorbent pads were put in the drain to catch as much product as possible. Contents of the box truck had to be offloaded into another truck that was provided by the wrecker company prior to up righting the overturned truck. Rescue Engine 205, Chief 201 and Battalion 209 responded along with units of Washington County Fire Rescue, Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, Washington County Sheriffs’ Department and Department of Environmental Quality. A hazardous materials contract company was called in to remove the used pads and booms, along with any remaining product in the drain. Fire units cleared the scene around 12:30.
