At 08:02, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a multiple vehicle accident on Porterfield Highway. It was reported that a school bus had stopped on the highway and several vehicles behind the bus failed to stop in the south bound lane. One vehicle ended up on its top. There were five vehicles involved. Rescue Engine 205, Rescue Engine 206, Brush 208, Chief 201, and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Abingdon Ambulance Service, Washington County Sheriffs’ Department, and VA State Police. Several occupants from the vehicles were transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital. Traffic was delayed in this lane and rerouted to the shoulder. All fire units cleared at 09:33.
