At 10:41, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an accident around mile marker 18 in the northbound lane of Interstate 81. Three vehicles were involved. A car involved landed upside down in a ditch. The driver was not injured and was able to climb out on her own. One tractor trailer driver was injured and was transported by MedFlight to Bristol Regional Medical Center. The driver of the other tractor trailer involved was not injured. Fire personnel applied oil dry onto the roadway that had leaked out of one of the tractor trailers. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205, and Utility 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Abingdon Ambulance Service, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Department of Transporation. This was the third accident on Interstate 81 in the last 17 hours that was serious enough to require MedFlight to transport a patient. Units cleared at 11:47.
