At 5:35, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a fuel leak from a tractor trailer at the Exit 13 Truck Rest Area. Upon arrival, there was a large amount of diesel fuel on the parking lot. The tractor trailer driver involved indicated he ran over something around the Exit 5 area and had made it to the rest area. One of the fuel tanks had a large cut and was leaking heavily. Abingdon Fire personnel put down about 800 pounds of oil dry (40 bags @ 20 pounds each). After the fuel had emptied the tank, fire personnel turned the scene over to a contracted cleanup crew. Rescue Engine 205, Utility 210 and Chief 201 responded along with units of the Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Emergency Services, Virginia Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Quality.
