Four Vehicle Accidents Today – September 8, 2017

Friday was not a good day to be on the roadways. Abingdon Fire responded to 4 separate vehicle accidents throughout the day. The first accident was in front of Watauga Elementary School at 0800. This accident involved three vehicles that were in the process of turning into the school. Nobody was transported in this incident, but the accident left heavy amounts of fluids in the roadway. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205 and Utility 210 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Virginia State Police. The second accident involved a motorcycle when the operator lost control in a curve on Merman Street. The operator was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital by Washington County Life Saving Crew. Chief 201 and Rescue Engine 205 responded along with the unit from the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Virginia State Police. The third and probably the most serious vehicle accident of the day occurred in the 17000 Block of Jeb Stuart Highway. Two vehicles ran together in the turn lane causing air bag deployment. Two subjects in a Pathfinder were transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital by Washington County Life Saving Crew and Abingdon Ambulance Service. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205, and Utility 210 responded along with the units from Washington County Life Saving Crew, Abingdon Ambulance Service and Virginia State Police. The final accident of the day occurred at 22:06 when a single vehicle t-boned the guardrail at Exit 19 on Northbound Interstate 81. This was a double guardrail and the vehicle cut through the first railing. The single occupant was uninjured except for some airbag burns. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205 and Rescue Engine 206 responded along with Abingdon Police Officers and Virginia State Police units.
