Four Vehicle Accident on Interstate 81 – September 17, 2021

At 1534, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a four vehicle accident on Interstate 81. The accident occurred in the southbound lane about the 17 mile marker. Two cars and two tractor trailers were involved. The vehicles involved all had sufficient damage that required them to be towed. There were no injuries. One tractor trailer had fluids leaking from the front end and fire personnel applied oil dry to stop the flow. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205, Rescue Engine 206, and Utility 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Department of Transportation. Traffic was reduced to one lane, thus creating large backups on the Interstate and in the Town of Abingdon.
