Forest/Brush Fire on Porterfield Highway – April 8, 2021

At 1137, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a forest/brush fire in the 14000 Block of Porterfield Highway. The fire was started by a subject burning brush at his home. The burn ban was in effect at that time and the winds were a major factor in this fire. The wind pushed the fire up the mountain and several attempts to establish a fire break were unsuccessful. One estimate was that 5 acres burned. Brumley Gap Fire and Clinch Mountain Fire were also requested for assistance. Washington County Life Saving Crew also stood by in the event medical assistance was needed. Chief 201, Battalion 209. Assistant Chief 211, Tanker 207, Brush 208 and Rescue Engine 205 responded along with units of the Virginian Department of Forestry, which provided several personnel and a bulldozer, Abingdon units cleared about 5 hours after the initial alert.
