Fatal Accident on Interstate 81 at the 14.2 Mile Marker – December 8, 2017

At 10:31, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a single vehicle accident on Interstate 81. Initial reports indicated a single vehicle accident with entrapment and fire. Upon arrival, there was no fire, and the single occupant was determined to be a fatality. The vehicle left the roadway, hit a guardrail and came to rest in the median on its side. Stabilization struts were deployed, and the vehicle top was removed using the “Jaws of Life” to extricate the single occupant. Chief 201 and Rescue Engine 205 responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Virginia State Police, Washington County Department of Emergency Management, and Virginia Department of Transportation.
