Double Tractor Trailer Accident on Interstate 81 – December 10, 2017

At 05:16, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an accident involving a double tractor trailer at the Southbound Interstate 81 Exit 14 Bridge. The truck had hit the bridge and ended up on its side. The second trailer’s rear wheels were hanging off the bridge over Jonesboro Road. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed. Both Southbound lanes at bridge were closed for several hours while cleanup was completed. Traffic was able to exit on the Southbound off ramp and reenter the Interstate at the Exit 14 Southbound on ramp. Chief 201, Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205, Battalion 209 and Utility 210 with the Rehab Trailer responded along with units from the Washington County Life Saving Crew, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation. Two local wrecker companies; Yarber Tire and Abingdon Collision and Towing brought several heavy wreckers to remove the tractor trailer. The driving lane of the bridge remained closed most of the afternoon while guardrail repairs were being made.
