Aviation Accident – May 23, 2021

At 12:44, Abingdon Fire was requested to assist Virginia Highlands Airport Personnel with a fuel leak on a small aircraft that had veered off the runway and down an embankment. Chief 201, Rescue Engine 205 and Utility 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Virginia State Police. The plane had taken off, but lost power and was forced back down on the runway. Since the plane was at the runway end, the pilot was forced to make a shape right turn toward the taxiway. The plane was traveling too fast to make that turn and ended up going down the embankment. Both the pilot and passenger were unhurt, and the plane suffered limit damage. Fire Personnel were able to stop the fuel leak.
