At 05:32, Abingdon Fire was alerted to an animal rescue at the Interstate 81 Truck Rest Area. A truck driver had let his puppy out of his truck, and it fell into a storm drain to a depth of approximately 15 feet. Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205 and Battalion 209 responded. After determining the puppy was alive, the drain grate was removed, and the puppy was successfully retrieved and found to be unhurt.
