At 15:55, Abingdon Fire was dispatched to an accident involving an ambulance at the intersection of Porterfield Highway and McBroom Street. The ambulance had reportedly lost its brakes traveling down McBroom Street; crossed 4 lanes of traffic, ran onto a residential driveway bridge, crossed a creek and came to rest after hitting a tree. Both EMS personnel were transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Chief 202, Rescue Engine 205 and Battalion 209 responded along with units from the Abingdon Police Department and Abingdon Ambulance Service. Two heavy wreckers were brought in to remove the ambulance.
