At 1744, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a truck accident at the top of the Exit 17 northbound onramp .A box truck was laying on its side. This truck blocked both of the northbound lanes with heavy fuel spillage on the roadway. This section of the Interstate is being reconstructed with a new configuration of Exit 17. This accident caused a heavy backup in the northbound lanes which could have led to the second accident at mile marker 14.1 about 1904. This involved a car running into the back of a tractor trailer that has stopped for the first accident. The third accident occurred at the 14.1 mile marker when a tractor part only of a tractor-trailer skidded off the roadway and onto a bank. It appears that wet roads and limited visibility were contributing facts in the accidents. The second and third accidents involved vehicles trying to stop for vehicles that had already stopped for the original accident. Utility 211 and Rescue Engine 205 responded to the first accident, Rescue Engine 206 responded to the second accident and Rescue Engine 206, Utility 210 and Battalion 209 responded to the third accident.
