At 09:19, Abingdon Fire was alerted to a small plane crash at the Virginia Highlands Airport. Pilot took off from an airport in Ohio and was stopping at Highlands to refuel for his trip. Upon landing, plane veered off the runway, hit an embankment, flipped over, and landed on a new runway under construction. Pilot was trapped inside the aircraft until Airport Personnel and members of the MedFlight Crew were able to raise the tail of the aircraft to free the pilot. He sustained a head injury and was transported to Bristol Regional Medical Center by MedFlight. Fuel spill was contained by fire personnel. Chief 201, Asst Chief 211, Battalion 209, Rescue Engine 205, and Utility 210 responded along with units of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Virginia State Police. Plane was left in the crash position until members of the FFA can investigate.

The Town of Abingdon Fire Department uses the KEYSECURE master key security system to control the KNOX-BOX master key. The KEYSECURE master key security system provides accountability with an audit trail giving the date, time and user ID for each key release.
Building entrance keys, access cards and floor plans can be stored in the high-security KNOX-BOX mounted near the building entrance. The KNOX-BOX is purchased by the property owner and is keyed to a single master key controlled by the Town of Abingdon Fire Department.
